8th Sept 2009                        as many had expected, HRH Dasho Jigyel U. Wangchuck and team Phoja are now in the finals after having defeated Nazhoen Charo and Thu Tob in the semi final match today. They did it with their 50 Kareys and 2 game sets. Most had expected as much, but hundreds flocked to the Changlimithang range to see Phoja actually do it.

Unlike the two earlier semi finals, where the losing teams had no chance to equalize whatsoever after certain point in a match, today Nazhoen Charo had the chance to equal Phoja’s two game set till the end of last round, while Thu Tob with no game sets had same chance till the 14th round. bhutan-archery-sept-8

It was in the 4th round that Phoja struck with their first game set, when all the playing members found the target, with two of them hitting dobjis. In total, in the single round, 7 Kareys were hit. Two dobjis of Capt. Kezang Jigme and Chencho was complemented by one Karey each of other team mates including a bull eye hit of HRH Dasho Jigyel U. Wangchuck – effectively putting the team on the winning path.

Six rounds later, after the Phoja’s game set, Nazhoen Charo managed to wrest one game set after adding up scores from 8th and the 10th round. Some speculated a penalty shootout thereafter till the 13th round, when Phoja completed their 2nd game set. But still some enthusiasts were not dissuaded, continuing to hope for the penalty with expectation that Nazhoen Charo would come up with single round game set but that never happened – making Phoja one of the three best teams of year 2009 from among 154 teams that started off the tournament.

The other match opponent of Thu Tob, though was hardly in the competition, displayed enormous sportsmanship with jovial acceptance of the result. Thu Tob hit 28 Kareys for no game set. Between Thu Tob’s sporting spirit, Nazhoen Charo’s competitive play and Phoja’s exceptional skill, one of the most engaging matches was displayed. Despite interruptions in match due to rain, that lengthened the game, most of the spectators stayed on till the end.

Spectators were also kept engaged not only by team performance but also by individual skills like that of Sonam Lhagyel who hit 16 Kareys in today’s 15 round or that of Kinley Tshering who hit 15. Capt Kezang Jigme also hit 12 Kareys. In fact, after Phoja’s win today, Sonam Lhagyel and Capt. Kezang Jigme are top contenders for the Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP).

Finals MVP prize is the only category of the tournament (not inset competition of ‘Pchani’) that an individual can take along with other prizes. Both the contenders of Sonam Lhagyel and Kezang Jigme are already title holders of Best Archer Runners Up and Best New Archer respectively and there is chance that one of them can also add the title of MVP.

But that is story that will be completed on Sept 12 after Phoja, Quality Gases Pvt. Ltd and Namseycholing R ends the 71 day tournament.
